Week 33: Headship — The Messiah’s Healing of the Sick: The Kingdom’s Compassion, Mark 1:29-34; Matt. 11:2-6
As Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth came to declare and demonstrate the rule of God in his words and deeds. His healings as the Messiah show us that God’s reign arrives visibly and with compassion, a concrete manifestation of the new life it represents. Jesus meets the fevered and broken with hope, and reveals Kingdom life to the gathered crowd alike, naming compassion and mercy as sure signs of the Kingdom’s manifestation. The same is true today. In declaring God’s rule, we can bring our real distress to a King Who touches the afflicted, Who desires to transform us and to restore us to service under God’s reign, taking no offense at his ways.
Our Focus Today
Authority Over Every Affliction, Mark 1:34
As the Messiah-King of Yahweh Jesus wields the sovereign authority of the Kingdom, demonstrating his rule over the entire domain of evil, healing every kind of disease and casting out the demons whom he would not even permit to speak.
Invocation
Sovereign Lord, you healed every disease and cast out demons who fell silent at your word. I affirm your sovereign rule and place in my life today. Exercise your rule over the afflictions that trouble our minds and bodies, those wicked powers that have sought to oppress our spirits, and the fears that plague us each day. Let nothing in the domain of evil stand before you, as you work on behalf of your people, for your Word reigns over all. I trust in your sovereign dominion today! Amen.

Authority Over Every Affliction, Mark 1:34
As the Messiah-King of Yahweh Jesus wields the sovereign authority of the Kingdom, demonstrating his rule over the entire domain of evil, healing every kind of disease and casting out the demons whom he would not even permit to speak.
Reflection
In Jesus of Nazareth, God is reasserting his right to rule in the midst of the kingdom of the enemy. His authority is mighty and total. He has authority over every disease, commands the demons, and even governs when and how his identity is revealed. There is no affliction, power of darkness, or circumstance beyond his rule and authority. As such, we can confidently bring to him, our High Priest as well as our Lord, every trouble, confident that the same sovereign word which silenced demons then still reigns over all that would harm or oppress us.
Engaging God’s Word Today
Is there some affliction or dark power in your life you have quietly judged too strong for God to master? Why have you felt that way about it? How can the knowledge that the Messiah’s authority reaches across every disease, every demon, and even the disclosure of his own name, change your view about that area in your life?
Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, The Father Almighty,

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Benediction
Thank you for the promise of your Kingdom, Father, the hope of your restoration of your will and way to this world again. In sending Jesus to us we now have hope. I leave today under the authority of the Messiah, whose word still heals disease, casts out demons, and rules the whole domain of evil. Show me how to never allow any affliction or power of darkness to make me afraid, for your Son is the same sovereign Lord who silenced the spirits and now reigns over all that would harm us. Holy Spirit, teach me to walk in the confidence of his dominion, which no trouble can overthrow. Amen.

“I have summarized the narrative of God. This is the narrative that Christians confess. The church witnesses to this story: we sing it in our worship, proclaim it in our speech and preaching, inhabit it in our spirituality, live it in our relationships, enact it through works of love, and extend it in missions throughout the world. There is no story, no philosophy, no religion, no ideology in all of heaven and earth that is a more profound narrative of the world. That God, who is the Creator, would himself become the Redeemer is unthinkable. But it’s true. God takes our death and suffering into himself and defeats it on the cross. He reclaims his universe when he rises from the dead to conquer evil and restore the Garden. All other stories of the world—whether Muslim extremism or American individualism—are stories of humanity living under the demand of a God who expects each person to make themselves acceptable through a system of works. Works righteousness always says, “We are part of the problem. We are also part of the solution.” Grace always says, “There is one person who is the solution. His name is Jesus.”
